Planned Filming

We plan to re film a few shots, were waiting on the opinion of our peers so we can all agree on a time. We have also agreed to film some shots on top of hill were we took the photos for the digipak. With those shots we will incorporate them with the shots we currently have involving the artist in the studio, this is to make the shots more interesting as those ends shots are the most boring as the camera is in a fixed position while filming and there all filmed in one location.

Editing 3

Once we had finished editing we uploaded the finished first draft. We straight away ran into some issues involving the end project, this includes it not working on all formats as well as on certain systems the colour correction is off resulting in scenes often being too dark. We learnt this quickly and decided to take it down and re-upload it.

Friday 9 December 2016

Editing 2

Another issue we ran in was that we felt the shot in the party scene was to dark due to the fact that I was unaware of  a second plug however after putting some more shots in we felt that it looked good and wasn't dark enough to be intrusive. Ghanshyam began to play around colour correction which makes the shots look better and adds more saturation and contrast to the shots. We noticed that the colour correction didn't go with every shot so we played around with different filters and shots which we don't want to use a filter on.

Editing 1

Now that we have finished Ghanshyam has begun editing while the rest of us give our opinions on what may look good and what doesn't look good. The first struggle he ran into was lip syncing, this was due to the fact that it seemed that while singing, Jacob was listening to a different version of the song, another factor is that Jacob doesn't always pronounce the words well which leads to the song going out of sync fairly easily.

Filming 3

For the next shots we filmed the shots involving Jacob in a music studio as well as the shot of the love interest involved within the video. That shot was very easy as it only involves a panning shot of the girls face. The studio shot was much more difficult as it involved Jacob having to sing the entire song which would involve the editor to sync him up with song, what make it more difficult is the fact that its a close up so its very obvious if its out of sync.

Digipak Planning 9

After looking over the magazine advert, Sinead didnt like the look of it. She didnt like th fact that i distorted the main image of the digipak cover and made it very small so it wasnt the main focus point of the advert. She also didnt like the header of the advert "King J Debut Album" and would feel it to be more neccesary to have a logo as well as including social network links on the advert, alot like the panel i have done within the digipak that is speciofically for social networks.

Digipak Planning 8

I have now completed my magazine advert. With the magazine advert i am advertising King J's new album as well as having all of his social media so that it creates the artist more exposure. I have included a main image of the artist as well as a secondary image of all wall full of graffiti. With the background image i played around with the opacity so that it is more see through.

Friday 2 December 2016

Digipak Planning 7

I have now finished the digipak and put it into one document. I have done this by making all of the sections a JPG and made a blank document that is able to fit all of the sections in. After placing it in i realised that the last two sections clash due to the fact that they have a black border. The next step is to make a spine as well as a magazine advert.

Music Video First Draft

This is the first attempt for our completed music video.

Photoshoot

As a group we went to the location we initially started to film and used it as a place to take photographs of the artist. We took a little of hundred photos around the area and experimented with camera angles as well as the scenery of the particular shot. We also went to a location that we found during our first filming which was a large hill with a scenery consisting of buildings in the background. From these photos we would choose the ones to use on the digipak, we also decided to not use the same ones for example all have the same photo as the cover.

Choosing A Font

These are a selection of fonts that I looked at before settling on 'Beyond The Mountains'.

I originally looked at font that I saw while listening to music, the word displayed in the font was 'Swaggy Tracks' but I later found out that its not from a font and the artists just made Swaggy Tracks look like that.

Audience Profile

This is the audience profile for our music video.

Digipak Planning 6

I have finished the social network section of the digipak. The social media sites I chose are Facebook,Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. this was because these are the most popular social networks. I have used the name of the artist as the account name as its easily recognisable. The style and layout is similar to the tour dates part where there is a black border around the main image.

Digipak Planning 5

I have now completed my next section of the digipak involving the tour dates. I chose not to many dates so that it fits better onto the page as well as being a new artist so he wont have enough influence to prompt a bigger tour. For the next section I will be doing a page dedicated the social networks of the artist, this is done so that they can keep up to date with him and any projects he Is working on.

Digipak Planning 4

I have finished the design of both CD's. I positioned the text slanted to the side and fairly small but not to small where it wouldn't be visible.

I am now moving onto the other panels, I have decided to do one consisting of the artists tour dates. For inspiration I have looked at other artists such as Drake's 'Boy Meets World Tour'.

Animatics

This is the animatic that Ghanshyam made. An animatic consists of a story board that is then put onto an editing software and run in time with music. This gives the viewer an idea on what is going on during each part of the song.

Pitch

This is the pitch for our artist that we all worked on.

Digipak Planning 3

I am now finishing my digipak cover. I have decided to edit the photo by playing around with the brightness and contrast of the photo. The design I am going for is fairly over saturated and bright.

I am now moving onto the design for the two CD's, one which consists of the songs and the other of extras. The design I am going for will be simplistic like the cover, simply consisting of an image and text. The font I will use will be the same as the cover, 'Beyond The Mountain'. I will play around with the positioning of the text as its very important.

Monday 28 November 2016

Digipak Planning 2

I have now begin looking at possible fonts for the digipak as well as selecting possible candidates for photos. Although we decided not to use the same photos as the cover, some photos turned out really well so it was expected that we may use similar photos. After looking at photos I decided to use this as the front cover.

The fonts were difficult to choose as I didn't want one that looked to grimy or graffiti as that looks tacky and doesn't suit the conventions of rap however a font that is to curly or perceived as fancy also doesn't suit the conventions, The font that I have decided to use is 'Beyond The Mountains'.

Digipak Planning 1

While planning for my digipak I looked at a variety of other digipak's such as other students as well as Rap/RnB artists such as Eminem. Although I have drew a plan I decided early on that I wouldn't follow it and use other peoples work as inspiration. This is due to the fact that time was short and I dint have enough time to plan the digipak again so I had to start doing it.

Filming 2

For the next bunch of shots we filmed outside with the gang in the background. The gang consisted of myself, Ghanshyam and Ore. We filmed the shot were King J was running away from his past life represented by us as well the shot of Jacob on the phone, we done this to match with the lyrics. The location we used for this was the local fish and chip shop. Filming we fairly well except we had to retake shots due to us laughing or smiling  mid shot.

Filming 1

The first lot of shots we did were for the club scene. We go asked a group of people to help but only a handful came to the final shoot in the end. James and Jacob initially set up the set and me and Ghanshyam made any adjustments. During the shoot Jacob was the main actor, while James and Ghanshyam rotated on using the camera. I was in charge of the locating as well as any necessary props, in this case it was the smoke machine. During the filming the lights were not bright enough due to there being not enough plugs however while packing away we saw that the sofa was covering the plug so if w were to re shoot we would know that we can set up a light there. The smoke added a good atmosphere to the shots although it was frustrating to use as it would constantly cut out. Although when we looked at the shots and the camera and they looked fairly bad once we put them on the computer they looked much better.

Tuesday 22 November 2016

Logo Design

Ghanshyam made a selection of different logos that we will use to represent the artist, King J. The logos are strongly representing the theme of wealth as well as the music label, Triangle being that they have rights over him. This is the logo we will be using.

Journal Entry 1

The song we decided to use is Kid Cudi- Day 'N' Nite. We all agreed on the song as we felt we would be able to make a good music video for the specific song. The idea we have is feature both day and night life for our artist, this will include normal day to day life as well as parties and concerts in the night. There will be a strong theme of depression as loneliness as that what we felt it come off as from the lyrics as well as the current events to do with the artist.

Day 'N' Nite Lyric Analysis

Lyrics

Day and night (what, what)
I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind (what, what)
I look for peace
but see I don't attain (what, what)
What I need for keeps this silly game we play, play
Now look at this (what, what)
Madness to magnet keeps attracting me, me (what, what)
I try to run but see I'm not that fast (what, what)
I think I'm first but surely finish last, last

'cause day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change (never change)
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)

Hold the phone (what, what)
The lonely stoner, Mr. Solo Dolo (what, what)
He's on the move can't seem to shake the shade (what, what)
Within his dreams he sees the life he made, made
The pain is deep (what, what)
A silent sleeper you won't hear a peep, peep (what, what)
The girl he wants don't seem to want him too.
It seems the feelings that she had are through, through

'cause day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change (never change)
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)

Slow mo (what, what)
When the tempo slows up and creates that new, new (what, what)
He seems alive though he is feeling blue (what, what)
The sun is shining man he's super cool, cool
The lonely nights (what, what)
They fade away he slips into his white Nikes (what, what)
He smokes a clip and then he's on the way (what, what)
To free his mind in search of,
To free his mind in search of,
To free his mind in search of,

'cause day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change (never change)
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night (at, at, at night)

At, at, at night

The lyrics follow a common theme of loneliness, drugs/alcohol, love and depression. Important lyrics within the song includes:

I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind- Unable to rest due to the built up stress of life.

I look for peace but see I don't- Unable to find peace within himself due to

Madness to magnet keeps attracting me- Unable to escape life's problems.

I try to run but see I'm not that fast- He initially thought he could escape but soon realised that its much  more difficult to escape than he first thought.

The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night- Lonely and on drugs

He's all alone through the day and night- He is alone without friends throughout the day.

The lonely loner- Loneliness

The pain is deep- Struggling and suffering a lot.

The girl he wants don't seem to want him too- The girl he likes doesn't  have the same feelings back.

Jermaine Lamarr Cole known as J.Cole is an American recording artist who was raised in North Carolina. J Cole gained initial recognition after the release of his debut mix tape  'The Come Up' which was released in early 2007

Cole went on to release his debut studio album named 'Cole World: The Sideline Story' which would release in 2011 and debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and eventually go platinum.

Here are a selection of interesting music videos that J Cole has made:

Location Shots

These are a compilation of different location shots where we took our photos for the digipak. The location we chose was Thamesmead, we chose this location for its 'urban' scenery as well as one of our members, Jacob being familiar with the area. The location features a lot of graffiti as well as 'character' which represents the artist.

Artist Analysis- Joey Badass

This is a link for a presentation on the artist Joey Badass:

Artist Analysis- Jay Z

Shawn Corey Carter, known as Jay Z is an american rapper, businessman and investor. In 2014 his net worth was an estimated $520 million. He is one of the worlds best selling artists of all time having sold more than 100 million records and receiving 21 grammy awards. As an artist Jay z holds the record for most number one albums by a solo artist on the billboard 200 with 13.
Jay Z's inspiration includes artists such as Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway.

We have chose to use Jay Z as a source of inspiration being that there from the same location so growing up King J listened to a lot of Jay Z and took inspiration in not only music but persona and dress sense.

Digipak Analysis

Digipak's are designed with multiple sections where it can hold a music cd as well as anything else relevant to the music such as a track list and artwork. Digipaks are often displayed with interesting artwork on the cover relevant to the artist of music, this is down to make it more visually appealing.

The front cover of Eminems-Recovery is a very simplistic image of Eminem walking down a long road with "Recovery" in the top right position. Eminem is placed on the left side of the image, not. centre leaving space on the side for the road and background to show. Replacing the O in Recovery is the logo for the album.

The cover at the bottom right is the alternate front cover. In this image a lot more is going on in comparison such as a building and Eminem watching television within a glass box. This image could mean that Eminem feels trapped and out of touch when it comes to the outside world.

The Digipak is made airy simplistic mostly revolving around the photography as well as the artist being in the image, the imagery uses symbolism relating to the artist in general and his music.

Music Video Analysis- Rock

The music video I will be analysing will be Red Hot Chili Peppers- Under The Bridge. The music video consists of a lot of bright colours as well as the artist playing their instruments in the music video. The video features a lot of moving images blending together. This includes a clip where one of the artist is running which shows a close up of his face in the background. The theme of showing the artists playing there instruments is very common in rock songs as well as showing the artist lip syncing the lyrics of the song.

The location of the song differs, going from the middle of know where to walking down the street to in front of a green screen showing a starry night. the location as well as changing images and background images in the background transparent gives the music video a very trippy feeling.

This is an example of the use of overlaying moving images.

Music Video Analysis- Grime

The music video I have chosen to analysis is 67 ft Giggs - Lets Lurk. Grime music videos are usually very similar in that they are low budget and include a lot of flashing imagery as well as close ups and mid shots. The clothing used in the music video are usually hoodies as well as jogging bottoms or jeans, they are also shown with a lot of gold jewellery. The music video mostly consists of the different members of the group lip singing the song. While doing so they also show off a variety of hand signs.

The setting of the music video is a street which also filmed during the dark. this is done to give off a more rebellious feel to the music video. As well as showing a street, the music video often goes off to show their tours. The music video also goes onto feature police cars which once again goes with their rebellious nature. The budget overall is very low as seen by the setting used as well as how its shot, camera angles, editing etc. The camera follows the artists around lot, moving toward and away while also often looking up to artists to make them look bigger and more important. As well as a lot of movement involving the camera an affect is used which slows down and stutters, a lot like a lens flair effect.

Music Video Analysis- Hip Hop/Rap

The example I will be using is J. Cole - She Knows ft. Amber Coffman, Cults. The music video itself shows a clear narrative which is unusual in this style of music. The shots used in the music video are well taken as well as showing a variety of different shots. Shots used include close ups, over the shoulder shots and two shots as well as an establishing shot used at the begging of the music video. The music video doesn't not conform to the usual Hip Hop/Rap music video which is usually simplistic in its nature as well as will often just feature . The music video also follows a strong narrative of a young boy enjoying his youth who stumbles upon his mother cheating on his father. As a result of this he takes his frustration on his close friend.

As a group we have looked at the music video as possible inspiration for a narrative style music video. We thought that the selection of shots were interesting and also that its is shot in a way where the video looks like a scene from a film.

My second example of a Hip Hop/Rap Music video is Kid Cudi- Day 'N' Nite. I have chose to analyse this as we have talked about this song a lot and are contemplating whether or not we should do a music video for this song. The music features a combination of filmed as well as animations and drawings to make the video more visually appealing. The music video is very simple and bland however with the implemented animations and drawings it makes the video more interesting. The music video features a lot of close ups as the faces of the people are defaced and turned into something else using the animations.

Lesson 1 Notes

The invention of film and cinema brought about the possibility of combining music and moving images, this brought together what we know call 'music videos.' Advances in technology have changed music videos by implementing advances in CGI as well as the quality of filming.

Music videos have been around since the 1920s with jazz artists such as Bessie Smith who made short films to accompany popular songs. Music also previously used a live performance when being featured in the music video whereas now they use a version of the song made in the studio.

Bob Dylan

In 1965 Bob Dylan filmed the music video for Subterranean Homesick Blues. This music video was comprised of a man showing the audience cards with specific words and phrases featured in the song. The filming is also done in black and white as there no cameras that filmed in colours back then. The music video is widely credited to be one of the first modern music videos.

1970's

In the 1970's record industries realise the potential that tv shows have as a platform for there music so they begin t use music in tv shows to promotes the songs as well as artists singing them. This is where they focuses on short "promos" which was the early music video which was used instead of live performances of the artist on the TV-stage.

Technical Codes- Cinematography

Cinematography is is the way in which it is filmed as well as the way in which the images are sequenced. In a music video this ma include the camera following someone walking about or dancing.

Technical Codes- Editing

Editing in a music video may include fast cuts as well as a montage of the clip. The pacing of these clips as well as how they transition will establish the mood of the music video. Enhancing the digital effects is done to offer pleasure to its audience, effects may include split screens, colourisation and CGI.

Development of technical codes

The key development of music videos is the video recording process and the way in which the video is edited. High quality colour video tape and portable cameras has enabled pop acts to produce promotional videos. The modern day music videos we see today are based off MTV.
